16 men and 5 women entered the Region's Intermediate Foil competition held at Dayncourt School Specialist Sports College. The standard of fencing was noticeably higher than last year and many matches turned on the last hit.

With four medals in contention and five entrants the women's competition was hard fought. Jade Cerff of Leicester City Fencing Club, runner up in the Beginners' Steam Foil competition last February was seeded fourth after the first round but in the fight-off for a place in the semi-final went down to newcomer Maria Melbourne of Radcliffe Sword Club, 15 - 14. Fencing in her first competition ever, 15 year old Azaria Jenney of Foiled Again Fencing Club showed a great deal of promise with a convincing win over another newcomer, third seeded Kath Thompson of Radcliffe Sword Club, to a place in the final. Another Radcliffe Sword fencer, Sarah Banks, winner of the Beginners' Steam Foil, demonstrated her consistency throughout the competition but was taken to the wire by Azaria, just pipping her to the last hit in a nail-biting final, 15 - 14.

There were 16 contenders in the men's competition, many competing for the first time. Andy Brailsford of Radcliffe Sword and Lee Garner of Leicester City, winner and runner-up respectively of last February's Beginners' Steam Foil couldn't quite find their previous form against some determined opposition from the likes of the Touche fencers, James Hume and Rob Webb, Foiled Again's Nick Buxton (fencing only three months), Hinckley Fencing Club's Peter Crudgington and Jonathan Williams from Bangor University. The seeding list after the second round was disrupted in the last 16 DE with 11th seed Chris Reed of Radcliffe Sword working hard to knock out 6th seed Rob Webb, 15 - 14 and in the last 8 1st seed James Hume going out to 9th seed Stephen Dowdy at time, 14 - 13. Crudgington did not worry Buxton in their semi final fight, the latter winning convincingly 15 - 4. Williams beat Dowdy in their semi-final fight 15 - 10 for a place in the final, but had little left to offer a pumped-up Buxton who ran out a convincing winner 15 - 4.
